Why write?

Since February 2007, Linda and I have been podcasting regularly here on the Indie Travel Podcast. So why start writing?

We know that you enjoy the audio content that we bring each week: your comments and emails, along with a steadily growing audience prove it. However there are a lot of voices we’d like to showcase but can’t because of the difficulties of recording.

//www.flickr.com/photos/hi-tekznologikTo remedy this we have invited travellers to start writing for us on a regular basis. We chose them because we’ve read their blogs, followed their travels and have had good conversations with all of them. They understand “indie travel”: they are independent travellers with an adventurous spirit and we wanted to showcase them and give them a fresh platform to share their experiences and travel knowledge.

This won’t affect the quantity of audio that Linda and I produce: we still intend to bring you an episode every Friday. And we might have some more tricks up our sleeve by the end of the year too.

We’re really excited about this new collaboration: we’ll be mentioning each new article on the podcast each week and doing what we can to promote it. You’ll notice some changes around the site which should help you to explore these articles.

Firstly, you’ll notice the new “Articles” tab on the navigation menu. This will take you to a digest of all the recent articles and a featured author profile. Secondly, that author will also be featured on the homepage along with three articles we think are exceptional. Thirdly, the new “article feed” is now being advertised in the sidebar and at the bottom of each post. You can use this to receive new updates in your RSS reader. Like all subscriptions on the Indie Travel Podcast it’s free - subscribe now. (If you’re subscribed to this feed, you’ll get podcasts and articles - if you subscribe to this feed, you’ll only get articles.)

How can you support this new development? Firstly, spend some time each week checking out the new content and leave a comment to challenge or amplify the authors’ work. Secondly, add our pages to your social networking sites like Facebook or Stumbleupon. This ensures that a wider audience discovers the Indie Travel Podcast.

Some of our writers have years of experience; others are just beginning to find their voice. As they support the Indie Travel Podcast community by writing for us, we hope everyone will join in to read their work and add their comments.

The Indie Travel Podcast gives great advice for independent travellers. You may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or subscribe in iTunes. Both are free and you can find out more here. Thanks for visiting!

Cool! I’m really excited about this. I can’t wait to see some of them!!

When are the first articles being published?

    Your whole show is awesome!

    Thanks Sarah.

    In short, Wednesday 14 May.

At the moment we’ve got four writers on board, along with Linda and myself. We’re hoping to put out a new article each Wednesday. Each of our writers are going to be writing monthly “columns” with Linda and I pitching in during long months so that each author is published once a month.

We’re also hoping to get more people on board so we can publish more regularly: why don’t you give it a crack? We’re after a commitment for one article a month/fortnight/week for the foreseeable future: you keep full copyright and we’ll be running ads in the future to try and compensate all our contributors. If you’re interested you can use the “contact” tab to get in touch.

While I’m mentioning contributing — would you take five minutes and fill out the survey at the top of the page? It’d help us a lot.
