Flight costs and giveaways (Indie Travel Newsletter)

Hi everyone!

Welcome to our newsletter for February. Did you do anything for Valentine’s day? Craig managed to stand up an interviewee! We’ll be editing that interview with Sherry Ott and releasing it next month.

Personal News

We’re into the last two weeks of work for the next couple of months. Things are going to be so busy and so much fun after we finish up. Craig’s studying for his CEVNI and ICC (canal boating qualifications) and we’re in preparation for walking the Camino Frances of the Camino de Santiago de Compostella - five weeks walking across northern Spain.

After a crazy couple of weeks in Turkey (see the photo below) we’ve spent the last week gardening for accommodation and food with a cousin in England. Didn’t win the pub quiz either.

Site News

Well, things have been clicking along nicely with the site. It’s our first birthday month and we’ve also had our 50th episode which we released on Friday. Obviously the main focus this month has been our competitions - we’ve had seven winners so far and there’s a lot more to go in the next two weeks.

We’ve been asking all our listeners to help us reach 50,000 downloads. As of today we’ve got just under 47,500 and we could still use your help. Consider emailing a friend or ten about our show and give them the following link, which will open our show’s page in iTunes where they can click “subscribe”:

Photos

There are two photos that we’d like to showcase this week. They are both from the Indie Travel Podcast flickr group. You can add your photos too.

The secret costs of budget airlines

We were recently forwarded the following list of “extras” that are added by some airlines. Ouch!
▪ £12 to use check-in desks - Ryanair
▪ £15 for priority boarding - EasyJet
▪ £20 for taking a baby (under 2) - Ryanair
▪ £24 for carrying a booster seat - Ryanair
▪ £24 to check in suitcase - Jet2
▪ £24 credit card charges for family of four - Ryanair
▪ £56 to take musical instrument on board - Jet2
▪ £60 to check in sports equipment - Ryanair
▪ £70 to change your name on ticket - Ryanair
▪ £150 excess baggage charge for long-haul flights - BA

We normally use skyscanner and momondo to pick our flights. Got something better?

Poll of the month

We’re running the same poll as last time: How long should our shows be? From now on we’ll rotate these at the beginning of each month, so this is your last chance to vote and effect our show length for the rest of the year.

At the moment we’re looking to extend our shows out to 15-20 minutes, so have your say.

Competitions

This week you can win a Joby Gorillapod thanks to Joby themselves! Just listen to the “secret” audio file on the feed and email us the password there. If you haven’t already, subscribe in iTunes to listen and win.

There are so few entries to win the five Lonely Planet books that you have a great chance! Write a short story about past, present or future travels and email it to us or put it on your blog with the footer, “The Indie Travel Podcast might give me Lonely Planet books for writing this!“.

And don’t forget to tell us about your most interesting hostel or hotel experience to win even more!

Thanks for listening!
