Newsletter 04
Hi and welcome to the New Year.
Personal News
Linda and I have been having a blast in 2008; it’s a great feeling to be starting fresh with a new perspective on travel and a new chance to experience this awesome planet. I hate sounding like a tourist brochure, but I have to admit I’m having a lot of fun and I plan to have a lot more.
We’re just getting back into the swing of work and writing: a little difficult after our seven week break! We had an amazing Christmas and New Years visiting friends in Germany and then zapped through seven countries in the first seven days of the 2008. We’re trying our hand at more and more freelancing: both writing articles and podcasting. You can find a list of Craig’s recent writing on our homepage: www.mars-hill.co.nz.
Preparation has begun for the Camino de Santiago de Compostela: guidebooks are in the mail and a new pack has been bought. We’ll be reviewing it and talking about downsizing your luggage in the near future.
Site News
This week’s show is an update of our first ever show: “What is the Indie Travel Podcast?” We talk about the show, the site and the community. It’s probably well known to all of you regular subscribers, so we’re giving you a bonus tip in this newsletter.
We also talk about our most popular posts for 2007. Here are the links:
Most popular interview: Kate McCarter
Most popular review: Vibram Five Fingers
Most popular tip: Tips for eating out cheaply
These are based on the download numbers, rather than feedback or links.
Photos
The photo pool has been a deadly quiet this month, so get over to flickr and add some shots! You must have some holiday travel photos to share with us.
Laundry tips:
A few specific tips on handwashing; a practise we espouse to save packing extra clothes and avoiding the sometimes ludicrous cleaning charges proffered by hotels. Jeans and socks are two items that can be tricky to deal with well, but here’s a few ideas to help you along.
Jeans: Put your jeans on then head into the shower (or bathtub). This way it’s easy to get them wet and to manipulate the suds around.
Socks: Fill the sink with water and get some suds happening before slipping a sock over each hand — like a pair of mittens. Now it’s quite easy to wash the whole of both socks.
Interested? If you haven’t already, have a listen to Episode 19: Laundry on the Road.
Interact
As always we love to hear from you: your ideas and encouragement really…encourage us. So please hit reply and let us know what your travel plans are for the coming year. It’d be really cool to see more of what people are up to — at home or abroad. Please put some photos into the photo pool on flickr; that’d be awesome.
We’re coming up to our first podcast birthday and there will (hopefully) be some prizes to pass around. If you’d like to sponsor a prize or know someone in the travel/travel clothing or equipment industry who are keen to partner with us please help us get in touch with them.
Bye for now!
